Lupe Fiasco is probably the most exciting rapper in the game right now. The success he has achieved has stemmed from his creativity, which is almost perplexing to me. With all odds stacked against him, Lupe has continued to have his way with an unforgiving industry (see Dumb It Down). However, it seems Lupe has begun to loosen up and play the game, choosing Kane Beatz over his in house producers for his newest track.
While some may be quick to criticize his “new direction,” I believe that this moment marks a positive change in Lupe’s artistic direction. He has shifted away from his ‘rebel’ label and has begun to embrace his leadership in hip hop, effectively following the footsteps of his creative big brothers, Kanye West and Jay-Z. While I do not believe Lupe can possibly achieve the same mainstream success as the aforementioned big two of hip hop, I believe that he can serve as an effective rallying point for underground artists and poets while still reaching out to a wider audience.
