With all the media focus on Japan’s melting nuclear reactors, the tense civil unrest in  Bahrain has largely flown under the radar.

There are several competing forces at play in Bahrain, including the larger Sunni Shiite divide and the totalitarian monarchy which has ruled Bahrain for the past 200 years. Over the past couple days, these conflicts have manifested in total civil unrest and subsequently, violence. There have been reports of innocent civilians being killed …

Here are a couple interesting articles to get you caught up:

Stories from Asian American Vietnam War Activist Mike Nakayama by caseyly16

In the spirit of progressive thought inspired by Lupe, check out this piece chronicling some of Mike Nakayama’s experiences during and after the Vietnam War.

Mike is a Japanese American Vietnam War Veteran and political activist. He has shown incredible bravery under fire and has two purple hearts (would have been three, but they only give one a day) for his efforts. After seeing first-hand the horrors of combat, Mike decided to help the anti-war movement by speaking about his experiences. He has helped to found groups such as AMMO and AAVVO which have represented Asian Americans for the past few decades. He continues his work today by educating the Asian American community about Lt. Watada‘s decision to refuse deployment to Iraq based on moral  and legal grounds (see more here: http://www.alternet.org/world/38258/).

I interviewed Mike on February 21st, 2011 at his home in Los Angeles. He is one of the most nonchalant, humble people that I know and as a result truly one of the most inspiring. Please take a moment to absorb some of his stories as it was certainly not easy for him to open up about his past experiences. Hopefully it will empower you to consciously make decisions and help out within your own communities, whether it be African American, Latino, or Asian.

This song may not be undiscovered per se, but it is definitely one of the most under-appreciated. Close your eyes, open your mind, sit back, and listen:
